Our whole crew loved visiting here. We brought the kids along and they had a blast:

  • The food was deliciousโ€”we sampled gourmet sourdough flatbreads and small plates that felt fresh and flavorful.

On the beverage side, Davenport pours handcrafted ciders and wines from their estate-grown apples. Lehigh Valley Zoo

Charming, manageable, and just the right size for a full family day without the overwhelm.

๐Ÿ“ Where itโ€™s at

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is located in Schnecksville, PA, nestled inside the larger Trexler Nature Preserve. Itโ€™s about a 5.5-hour drive from Erie, making it a great add-on to a trip through central or eastern Pennsylvania. Once inside the preserve, you follow signs up a winding road to the zoo’s entrance, which has a nice view and ample parking.

Advertisements

๐Ÿฆ– Whatโ€™s good

This zoo is small but mightyโ€”perfect for families with younger kids or anyone who doesnโ€™t want to spend a full 6+ hours navigating a massive zoo layout.

  • Wide paved paths are easy to walk or push a stroller on.
  • There are plenty of shaded areas, which makes summer visits more bearable.
  • Animal habitats are well-maintained and offer great close-up views of giraffes, camels, zebras, and more.

One of the highlights is the giraffe feeding stationโ€”definitely worth the few extra dollars for the experience. The zoo also features penguins, kangaroos, and river otters, plus a variety of birds and reptiles.

There are educational encounters scheduled throughout the day, and staff members are friendly and eager to chat about the animals.

There are a few play spaces and interactive zones for kids to climb or explore, and the gift shop is surprisingly cute. We picked up a few Fahlo plushies and bracelets, which let us track a snow leopard, a lion, and an elephant through an app. It was a fun and educational souvenir that the kids are still excited about! They even had sensory-friendly accommodations available when requested.

The zoo is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and there are clean restrooms and picnic tables available near the entrance.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Who itโ€™s good for

  • Families with small children who want a zoo experience without walking 10 miles
  • Grandparents or visitors who prefer compact, accessible layouts

  • Animal lovers who enjoy up-close encounters
  • Travelers heading to eastern PA looking for a fun half-day activity

๐ŸŒ Final thoughts

The Lehigh Valley Zoo makes for a lovely half-day adventure. Itโ€™s not overwhelming, but still full of charm and animal magic. We left with tired legs, happy hearts, and plenty of photos.

If you’re driving through eastern Pennsylvania or looking for a relaxed, kid-friendly outing, this little zoo is worth the detour.

Penn State Behrend Fields

Where it’s at:

The track at Behrend Fields is located right on the campus of Penn State Behrend, near Erie Hall. Parking is available in the lot used for the baseball and softball fields, just off Station Road. The whole area feels tucked away and peacefulโ€”great for unwinding or letting the kids stretch their legs.

Advertisements

What’s Good:

This is a classic outdoor rubberized track, in excellent condition and well-maintained. In addition to the track itself, there’s an excellent opportunity for walking on both pavement and dirt paths around the area, making it a great spot to mix up your routine or enjoy a more scenic stroll. While itโ€™s not nestled between the athletic fields, itโ€™s surrounded by trees and open green space that give it a peaceful, natural feel.

  • Walking or jogging with a stroller
  • Letting kids run safely in circles
  • Track workouts if you want to time your laps

There is a port-a-potty available just past the track, and the surrounding Behrend campus has wide sidewalks if you want to extend your walk. It’s also dog-friendly, but remember to clean up after your pup.

There are usually a few college students jogging or teams practicing, but itโ€™s rarely crowdedโ€”especially in the mornings and evenings. And because itโ€™s slightly elevated, you get a bit of a view of the hills beyond, especially at sunset.

If you’re looking for a little variety, there’s also a frisbee golf course on the nearby fields. Just be sure to bring your own frisbeeโ€”it’s a fun, low-key add-on to a walk or jog.

Can I bring my dog?

While dogs are not permitted on the track itself, they are welcome on the nearby sidewalks and open grassy areas around Behrend Fields. Keep them leashed and clean up after them, and you shouldnโ€™t run into any issues.

Advertisements

Who it’s Good For:

  • Families with kids who need a safe open space to burn energy
  • Fitness walkers and runners looking for a calm, consistent surface
  • Anyone rehabbing or easing into movement thanks to the soft track and flat layout
  • Parents with strollers

Final Thoughts:

The track at Behrend Fields is one of those hidden-in-plain-sight places. Whether youโ€™re looking for a quick walk, a way to reset your afternoon, or a place to run in peace, this spot is worth bookmarking.

If you’re nearby on a sunny day, stop by and take a few lapsโ€”you might just find a new favorite rhythm.

Property Description:

This is an outdoor only ice cream stand; a perfect place to visit during those Spring and Summer Erie afternoons and evenings. You will walk up to the window to place your order, and you’ll see their extraordinary menu behind the glass surrounding the ordering windows. There are picnic tables provided in front of the stand that you can enjoy your treats at, or you can eat your food in the comfort of your car in the big parking lot to the side and behind the ice cream stand. There is ample parking here, and you could easily eat your food from the back of an SUV, in a truck bed, or even in your car with the door open.

They are open 12 p.m.-9 p.m. daily.

What to Do:

This is a perfect place to grab some soft serve ice cream, of course! This second location of Whippy Dip features many of the same amazing menu items as the original, so please check out this blog we did on the original Whippy Dip to see some of their food offerings. You can grab soft serve, Perry’s Ice Cream, milk shakes, sundaes, and even some savory favorites!

We were loving the blue moon and mint flavored soft serve. One of us got the mint oreo madness and it was the perfect combination of mint and oreo. Another one of us enjoyed the banana eclipse, which featured the blue moon soft serve.

Because we had the littles with us, we had to taste a few tried-and-true favorites. They enjoyed a watermelon slushie and a kids size blue moon ice cream cone.

We also got pretzels with cheese, which our whole family enjoyed!

Who Can Go:

Anyone can enjoy this ice cream stand in Erie, PA. Bring the kids, grandkids, or even your dogs. There are many businesses in the area, so Whippy Dip 2 would be a great place to stop for a treat after appointments or an afternoon shopping. Or, grab a treat and head to Presque Isle!

One feature we found really neat about this ice cream stand in Erie, PA is the Perry’s Ice Cream Bulk Allergen Chart that is posted right in the window. The chart will tell you every flavor of Perry’s ice cream, and if that flavor has peanuts, tree nuts, egg, wheat, soy, milk/dairy, or gluten in it. We think this is great for anyone with allergies, or anyone avoiding certain ingredients!

Final Thoughts:

Whippy Dip 2 features the same incredible menu as the original Whippy Dip, and satisfies not only the sweet tooth but also the savory tooth. If you’re on the west side at an appointment or running errands, this is a great stop to break up your day! If you’re looking for ice cream near Presque Isle, this is also a great place to swing by before or after a trip to the beach!

IF you head to the Lake Erie Regiment booth, you’ll find bratwurst, hot ham and cheese pretzel sandwiches, German potato salad, fries, and hot dogs. Helmut’s boasts various types of strudel including apple, cherry, cheese, apricot and almond, as well as spinach puffs and broccoli puffs. We tried the spinach and feta puffs, and they were absolutely delicious! We also had bratwurst, fries, and a braided pretzel stick with beer cheese.

We also enjoyed some beer, because it’s German Fest! We had a grapefruit beer and the Oktoberfest. There are several beer options to choose from, and price ranges from $4 to $5 per glass. In order to buy beer, you do have to get beer tickets first, so keep that in mind! The beer tickets are right next to the beer, making that quite convenient!

This is a family event, so there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy! Balloon animals were made, faces were painted, and there were some swings toward the back of the festival grounds. Lemonade and funnel cakes were also available, and we may have gone through that line one or two times for our kiddos! There’s also a gift shop located in the main walkway of the festival, and it is under a tent. They have a lot of cool German clothes, hats, and other ethnic things, as well as dachshund socks and baltic amber jewelry! There’s also live music to enjoy, including The Mad Bavarian.

Another cool booth we came across was P.J.’s coins! If you like foreign currency, you’ll enjoy stopping by this booth to check out the different types of German currency. You can also grab a mystery envelope of coins for $2! We ended up getting 2 envelopes of mystery coins, and got coins from the Czech Republic, Jordan, Canada, Belgium, Newfoundland, France, United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Netherlands, Japan, Great Britain (not a Euro), and a Euro. Stop by their booth for some fun, or visit their shop which is located right across the street from the fairgrounds at 5152 Old French Road, Erie, PA 16509. They are open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays. In talking to the people running the booth, we also found out that they sell Christmas trees, starting after Black Friday! So if you’re looking for a live tree, check out their selection this holiday season!

In order to get the free parking, you can park at a lot on 34th and Ash at St. Peter & Paul. From there, a shuttle will take you to the festival.

Our kiddos likened this to Disney World; taking a shuttle to an ethnic festival was kind of like taking the Disney bus from your resort to Epcot and entering through the World Showcase!

Final Thoughts:

We really enjoyed Zabawa Polish Festival! We were there at a fairly busy time on a Saturday night, so we spent about 3 hours exploring the festival, considering we waited in a pretty long line inside of the social hall. (We do recommend checking it out at a time that wouldn’t be considered lunch or dinner if you want a quicker line experience!)
